Health checks and cardiovascular risk factor values over six years’ follow-up: Matched cohort study using electronic health records in England

PLoS Medicine Aug 04, 2019

Alageel S, et al. - Through a controlled, interrupted, time series study involving individuals registered with general practices in the Clinical Practice Research Datalink in England who received health checks between April 1, 2010, and December 31, 2013, researchers calculated the cardiovascular risk management and cardiovascular risk factor outcomes of the health check program during 6 years’ follow-up. Data from 127,891 individuals who completed the health check and 322,910 matched controls over 6 years’ follow-up were examined. Individuals who visited the health check usually had lower cardiovascular risk factor levels vs controls who did not attend the check. Over 6 years’ follow-up, visiting the health check was correlated with enhanced delivery of risk factor management interventions and lower risk factor values. Therefore, people who took up a health check regularly had lower risk factor values vs controls, and were more prone to receive risk factor interventions. Moreover, risk factor values demonstrated net decreases up to 6 years following health check-up in BMI, blood pressure, and smoking, which may be of public health significance.
