Group B Streptococcus in surgical site and non-invasive bacterial infections worldwide: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Collin SM, et al. - Researchers gathered data on group B Streptococcus (GBS; Streptococcus agalactiae) infection from 67 countries in order to determine the role of GBS in surgical site and non-invasive infections at all ages. GBS in orthopedic surgery was related to 0.37%, 0.87%, and 1.46% of superficial, deep, and organ/space surgical site infection (SSI), respectively. As a cause of post-caesarean section SSI, a more significant role of GBS was revealed; it was identified in 2.92%, 1.93%, and 9.69% of superficial, deep, and organ/space SSI, respectively. Findings thereby suggest GBS plays a role in a small proportion of surgical site and non-invasive infections, but a substantial proportion of invasive SSI after a caesarean section.
