Glycemic variability assessed by continuous glucose monitoring and the risk of diabetic retinopathy in latent autoimmune diabetes of the adult and type 2 diabetes
Journal of Diabetes Investigation Jan 06, 2019
Lu J, et al. - Among 192 patients with latent autoimmune diabetes of the adult (LADA) and 2,927 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, researchers assessed the associations of several metrics of glycemic variability (GV) with diabetic retinopathy (DR). Findings revealed that the prevalence of DR in LADA and patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus was 20.3% and 26.4%, respectively. Significant differences in sex, duration, systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels, and the use of calcium-channel blockers between people with and without DR were observed in LADA patients. According to findings, in patients with type 2 diabetes, GV is more strongly associated with DR than in LADA, implying that, for these two types of diabetes, different glucose-lowering strategies should be used.
