Glycemic overtreatment among very old adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Clinical Diabetology Apr 11, 2018
Mikolajczyk-Solinska M, et al. - Authors sought to evaluate the glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in hospitalized type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients aged ≥ 80 years. Additionally, they attempted to compare the level of HbA1c in diabetics with and without severe hypoglycemia (SH) at admission. Half of these patients achieved tight glycemic control, even though the harms of intensive hypoglycemic treatment surpassed the benefits for older patients with T2DM. Hospitalization was reported in every tenth patient due to SH. It was determined that SH patients demonstrated considerably lower mean HbA1c level vs those hospitalized for other reason. It was inferred that a major proportion of T2DM patients ≥ 80 years are possibly overtreated.
