Glycemic control in hospitalized patients with diabetes receiving corticosteroids using a neutral protamine Hagedorn insulin protocol: A randomized clinical trial
Diabetes Therapy Jul 04, 2018
Khowaja A, et al. - A randomized, prospective, non-blinded study was conducted to assess how well a neutral protamine Hagedorn (NPH) insulin-based protocol improves glycemic control in hospitalized subjects receiving corticosteroids. Participants in the study were patients with diabetes who were hospitalized and receiving prednisone ≥ 10 mg per day or an equivalent. Mean blood glucose level measured pre-meal and at bedtime for days 1-5 was the primary outcome measure. The study findings suggested that an NPH insulin-based protocol adjusted to account for corticosteroid dose, frequency, patient’s weight, and oral intake could improve glycemic control and prevent potential hyperglycemia-related complications in hospitalized subjects with diabetes receiving corticosteroids.
