Glycemic control and microvascular complications in adults with type 1 diabetes and long-lasting treated celiac disease: A case-control study
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Aug 05, 2018
Annalisa C, et al. - Researchers performed a case-control, observational study to examine if type 1 diabetes (T1DM) patients with comorbid long-lasting celiac disease (CD) treated with a gluten free diet (GFD) has any impact on glycemic control and the prevalence/severity of microvascular complications. This investigation was conducted on 34 patients with T1DM and GFD-treated CD and 66 patients with T1DM alone, matched for age, gender, and T1DM duration. Findings revealed that comorbid long-term CD treated with GFD doesn’t worsen glycemic control, nor does it negatively impact chronic microvascular complications in patients with T1DM. No differences were found in systolic blood pressure. Diastolic blood pressure was significantly lower in T1DM + CD. Compared to T1DM alone, patients with T1DM + CD have a lower glomerular filtration rate.
