Gestational diabetes and the risk of late stillbirth: A case–control study from England, UK
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Mar 25, 2019
Stacey T, et al. - In this prospective case-control study, researchers examined the separate effects of being ‘at risk’ of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and screening for GDM, and of raised fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and clinical diagnosis of GDM, on the risk of late stillbirth. This study included 291 women who had a stillbirth ≥28 weeks of gestation and 733 women with an ongoing pregnancy at the time of interview at the setting of 41 maternity units in the United Kingdom. As per findings, the higher risks of late stillbirth in women ‘at risk’ of GDM and/or with raised FPG could be reduced performing optimal screening and diagnosis of GDM. Avoidable risk of late stillbirth remains high among women with raised FPG who could not be diagnosed with GDM.
