Gender differences in the association between serum BDNF and cognitive impairment in schizophrenia patients using various antipsychotics
Journal of Psychiatric Research May 12, 2021
Dong R, Zhao NO, Wu HE, et al. - Experts aspired to explore whether there are gender differences in the connection between serum BDNF levels and cognitive performance in patients with schizophrenia taking different antipsychotics. They used Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status to evaluate the cognitive function of three groups of schizophrenia patients (420 on clozapine, 183 on risperidone, 215 on typical antipsychotic drugs) and 467 healthy controls. Regardless of the antipsychotic effect, female patients' cognitive function is superior to that of male patients. Each medication group shows a connection between BDNF and cognitive performance in male patients. Only the typical antipsychotic group, not the clozapine or risperidone groups, showed a substantial correlation in female patients.
