Functional connectivities in the brain that mediate the association between depressive problems and sleep quality

Cheng W, et al. - In 1017 study participants in the Human Connectome Project, researchers identified the brain areas that mediate the relationship of depressive symptoms with poor sleep quality and advance understanding of the differences in brain connectivity in depression. A neural basis for the relationship between depression and poor sleep quality was provided by the increased functional connectivity between these brain regions. Findings suggested an association of the Depressive Problems scores in this general population with functional connectivities between areas, including the lateral orbitofrontal cortex, cingulate cortex, precuneus, angular gyrus, and temporal cortex. They noted the implications of these discoveries in the treatment of depression and poor sleep quality.
