Full-fat dairy food intake is associated with a lower risk of incident diabetes among American Indians with low total dairy food intake

The Journal of Nutrition Jul 03, 2019

Kummer K, et al. - In a population with a high burden of diabetes (ie, American Indians), researchers focused on the links between full-fat vs low-fat dairy food intake and incident diabetes. American Indians who participated in the Strong Heart Family Study (SHFS), without diabetes at baseline (2001–2003) (n=1,623) were included. A mean follow-up of 11 years revealed 277 cases of diabetes. Low dairy food intake was reported by American Indians who participated in the SHFS. Lower risk of diabetes was observed among participants who reported higher full-fat dairy food consumption vs those who reported lower intake. Low-fat dairy food intake was not linked with diabetes.
