Irving A, et al. - Researchers assessed how quality-of-life and costs in critically ill adults are influenced by RBC storage duration in this first economic assessment alongside a full age of blood clinical trial with a large population. This investigation was carried out in 59 intensive care units (ICUs) in five countries and included adults with an anticipated ICU stay of at least 24 hours when the decision had been made to transfuse at least one RBC unit. Either the freshest or oldest available compatible RBC units (standard practice) were randomly received by patients. Without considering the additional supply cost of implementing a freshest available RBC strategy for critically ill patients, no improvement in quality of life or attenuation in other expenses was observed with the aforementioned policy vs standard transfusion practice.
