Frequent respiratory events in postoperative patients aged 60 years and above

Broens SJL, et al. – The intent here was to examine the occurrence of respiratory events in postoperative patients after discharge from the postanesthesia care unit. It was noted that bradypneic or apneic respiratory events were often reported in postoperative elderly patients. They occurred considerably late following the surgery. Hence, the recommendations put forth were continuous respiratory monitoring on the ward, particularly in patients with risk factors, such as an early occurrence of events, opioid use, and larger neck circumference.
