Frailty, body composition and the risk of mortality in incident hemodialysis patients: The Predictors of Arrhythmic and Cardiovascular Risk in End Stage Renal Disease study
Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation Jun 07, 2018
Fitzpatrick J, et al. - Researchers investigated the association of frail–obese phenotype with increased mortality risk among incident hemodialysis (HD) patients enrolled in the Predictors of Arrhythmic and Cardiovascular Risk in End Stage Renal Disease (PACE) study. They found an association of frailty with elevated mortality risk, even among the obese, in a population of adults initiating HD. Since a protective impact of obesity is assumed, frail–obese HD patients may represent a high-risk, often-overlooked population. Risk stratification may be facilitated by taking into account measurement of frailty and obesity. HD patients without general or abdominal obesity did not show any association of frailty with mortality.
