Fluid overload associates with major adverse kidney events in critically ill patients with acute kidney injury requiring continuous renal replacement therapy

Critical Care Medicine Aug 22, 2019

Woodward CW, Lambert J, Ortiz-Soriano V, et al. - Researchers investigated how fluid overload is associated with major adverse kidney events in critically ill patients requiring continuous renal replacement therapy for acute kidney injury. In this retrospective cohort study of 481 critically ill adults, they observed a higher risk of 90-day major adverse kidney events, including mortality and decreased renal recovery, in correlation with greater than 10% fluid overload. Further, they observed decreased renal recovery in correlation with the increased time between ICU admission and continuous renal replacement therapy initiation. These findings emphasize fluid overload as a potentially modifiable risk factor, irrespective of the timing of continuous renal replacement therapy initiation.
