Fluid balance after continuous renal replacement therapy initiation and outcome in paediatric multiple organ failure

Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Jun 17, 2019

Andersson A, et al. - Given a high risk of fluid overload in patients with multiple organ failure, researchers analyzed patients (n=63, age 0-18 years) with 3 or more failing organs receiving continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) because of acute kidney injury and/or fluid overload, to determine if the ability to achieve a negative fluid balance during the first 3 CRRT days was related to death in these patients. This retrospective cohort study was performed in a tertiary multidisciplinary academic paediatric hospital. According to the findings, improved patient outcome was observed in relation to early fluid removal in critically ill children receiving CRRT. In critical illness, prompt measures to avoid fluid overload are recommended.
