Five-year follow-up of nonfibrotic scars in the comparison of age-related macular degeneration treatments trials
Ophthalmology Jan 25, 2019
Daniel E, et al. - In this prospective cohort study within a randomized clinical trial, investigators examined 474 eyes to analyze the discrepancies at 5 years in visual acuity (VA) and macular morphologic characteristics in eyes [with nonfibrotic scar (NFS)] classified at 1 year in the Comparison of Age-Related Macular Degeneration Treatments Trials (CATT). They observed the development of fibrotic scar (FS) and geographic atrophy (GA) in 5% of the cases at 2 years whereas 28% and 21% at 5 years, respectively. They also noticed nongeographic atrophy (NGA) in 34%, 47%, and 65% of eyes at 1, 2, and 5 years, respectively. Cumulatively, NFS eyes illustrated less GA, less intraretinal fluid, more subretinal fluid, and less subretinal pigment epithelium fluid at 5 years. They did not find any change in mean thickness of the retina, subretinal tissue complex, and total retina across 1 to 5 years.
