Fatty liver and mortality: A cohort population study in South Italy
BMJ Open Jun 26, 2019
Caruso MG, et al. – Via performing a prospective cohort population study (n=1,708 older individuals), researchers examined the potential association of the presence and severity of liver steatosis with mortality. Any significant association among the presence and severity of liver steatosis and mortality of non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD) disease during a median follow-up period of 12 years couldn't be assessed. However, an increase in the risk of overall death by more than two times and risk of cancer-related death in the moderate liver steatosis was observed when the study was limited to alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD). Hence, any increased risk of death in NAFLD was not related to liver steatosis. Further, in people affected by AFLD, moderate steatosis could be a risk factor for mortality particularly because of cancer.
