Fasting plasma glucose level in the range of 90 to 99 mg/dL and the risk of the onset of type 2 diabetes: Population-based Panasonic cohort study 2

Journal of Diabetes Investigation Oct 15, 2021

Munekawa C, Okada H, Hamaguchi M, et al. - Among Japanese people with fasting plasma glucose level of 90-99 mg/dL, a progressively higher risk of type 2 diabetes was observed in association with the increasing level of fasting plasma glucose concentration.

  • This long-term retrospective cohort study involved 37,148 Japanese persons with normal plasma glucose level; of these, 1,028 developed type 2 diabetes.

  • According to Cox regression analyses, per 1 mg/dL rise in fasting plasma glucose level was associated with an increase by 9.0% in diabetes onset risk in people with concentration ranging from 90 to 99 mg/dL.

  • Relative to those with fasting glucose level ≤89 mg/dL, the adjusted hazard ratios for diabetes occurrence were 1.53, 1.76, 1.89, 3.17, and 3.41 at fasting plasma glucose level of 90–91, 92–93, 94–95, 96–97, and 98–99 mg/dL, respectively.

  • In obese people, adjusted hazards ratios for diabetes onset were 1.56, 1.82, 2.05, 3.53, and 3.28 at fasting plasma glucose level of 90–91, 92–93, 94–95, 96–97, and 98–99 mg/dL, respectively.
