Factors related to health-related quality of life in older people with multimorbidity and high health care consumption over a two-year period
BMC Geriatrics Jul 14, 2019
Klompstra L, et al. - In this secondary analysis of a randomized trial that was carried out in a municipality in south-eastern Sweden, researchers focused on the factors associated with health-related quality of life (HrQoL) in older people with multimorbidity and high healthcare consumption, who were living at home. Overall, 238 participants with a mean age of 82 years (52% female) were included. Findings revealed negative associations of higher symptom burden, lower ability in activities of daily living, and a higher degree of depression with HrQoL. A reduction in HrQoL over a 2-year period was reported in relation to a higher degree of depression at baseline and negative change in higher symptom burden. Therefore, significant indicators for HrQoL are symptom burden, activities of daily living, depression, and change in symptom burden over time. The evaluation of HrQoL, and HrQoL over time, was suggested to be essential for facilitating better delivery of appropriate healthcare to older people with high health care consumption living at home.
