Factors associated with the improved survival of head and neck neuroblastomas compared to other body sites

Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Jan 08, 2019

Kaufmann MR, et al. - Authors assessed 4,500 cases of neuroblastoma in a retrospective cohort study between 1973 and 2014 to assess the management of neuroblastoma in the head and neck vs other locations in the body and also to estimate the pediatric neuroblastoma survival rate. They noted the occurrence rate of 3.9% in the head and neck, 43.0% in the adrenal gland, and 53.1% in “other” sites. They found 89% and 84% of 2- and 5-year disease-specific survival rate in the head and neck vs 77% and 65% in the adrenal and 84% and 77% in the “other”. They noted a higher risk of disease-specific death (DSD) in adrenal gland vs the head and neck cohort, indicating a better prognosis in primary neuroblastoma of the head and neck. Cases that had surgery were observed with the lowest risk of DSD than all others.
