Factors associated with multiple suicide attempts in a nationally representative study of U.S. military veterans

Journal of Psychiatric Research Jun 10, 2021

Nichter B, Maguen S, Monteith LL, et al. - The present study was conducted to explore factors that distinguish single suicide attempters from multiple suicide attempters in a nationally representative sample of U.S. military veterans. Data from the 2019-2020 National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, which surveyed a representative sample of 4,069 U.S. veterans were examined. In the United States, half of military veterans who have attempted suicide report more than one attempt, implying that suicide attempts are not a one-time occurrence for a substantial proportion of veterans. The study demonstrates that veterans who attempt suicide more than once demonstrate more deliberate self-harm behavior and have greater psychiatric comorbidities relative to single attempters. Implications for future study exploring risk factors for suicide attempts among veterans are discussed.
