Kandasamy Y, et al. - The impact of prematurity on renal development was determined herein. It was noted that extremely premature neonates had a smaller renal volume (and fewer nephrons) and showed evidence of glomerular injury. In addition, they achieved similar estimated glomerular filtration rates at corrected term as term-born neonates, likely via single nephron hyperfiltration.
