Expediting red blood cell transfusions by syringing causes significant hemolysis

Transfusion Aug 24, 2017

De Villiers WL, et al. – The commonly used techniques (pneumatically pressurizing red blood cell (RBC) bags or manual syringing its contents) were compared on RBC hemolysis using a simulated transfusion model. Significant hemolysis and high free hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations occurred due to forceful manual syringing. Moreover, pressurizing RBC bags induced no more hemolysis than after gravity–facilitated transfusions. These findings suggested avoiding syringing to expedite RBC transfusions in favor of pneumatic RBC bag pressurization.
