Evoked potentials after painful cutaneous electrical stimulation depict pain relief during a conditioned pain modulation

BMC Neurology Sep 09, 2017

Hoffken O, et al. - For this study, the authors used painful cutaneous electrical stimulation (PCES) to induce test stimulus (TS) in a novel conditioned pain modulation (CPM)-model. Furthermore, they recorded the corresponding changes of cortical evoked potentials (PCES-EP) to assess a more objective parameter. They revealed that as changes in the electrophysiological response were paralleled by a consistent decrease in subjective pain ratings, the PCES-EPs were a quantitative measure of pain relief. This novel CPM paradigm was a feasible method, which could help to assess the function of the endogenous pain modulation processes.
