Evaluation of changes in functional status in the year after aortic valve replacement

JAMA Internal Medicine Feb 10, 2019

Kim DH, et al. - In this cohort study of 246 elderly patients, researchers determined functional status trajectories in the year after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR). Preoperative frailty level and major complications, as well as delirium, were related to functional decline or lack of improvement. In older adults with severe frailty undergoing TAVR or SAVR, functional decline or lack of improvement was common. Functional trajectory information can be useful for patient-centered decision making and perioperative care in order to optimize functional results.
