Evaluation of autonomic modulation of lung function and heart rate in children with cystic fibrosis

Pediatric Pulmonology Nov 12, 2020

de Carvalho EFT, Aletti F, Costa IP, et al. - Researchers assessed autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulation in pediatric population with cystic fibrosis (CF) as well as determined the impact of colonization by Pseudonomas aeruginosa via evaluation of heart rate variability (HRV) among colonized CF (CCF) children and noncolonized CF (NCCF) children. This analysis involved 16 children suffering from CF (7 CCF and 9 NCCF) and 7 healthy age‐matched control children. Lower forced expiratory volume was detected in the CCF group vs NCCF, suggesting an impairment of respiratory function. The likely sympathetic overactivity in CCF was further corroborated by the HRV parameters. Hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system was evident in children with CF. Specifically, a greater impairment of ANS modulation was noted in the CCF group. Both CCF and NCCF children demonstrated lower supine vagal activation in the HRV indices associated with sympathetic activation and decrease of indices suggesting vagal activity with the postural alteration from supine to standing vs the NCCF group.
