Evaluating the association of clinical factors with symptomatic recurrence of idiopathic subglottic stenosis

JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery May 14, 2019

Menapace DC, et al. For the establishment of the clinical factors of patients suffering from idiopathic subglottic stenosis (iSGS), along with body mass index (BMI, weight in kilograms divided by height in meter squares) and to assess the link with iSGS symptomatic recurrence, researchers conducted a survey, in which a total number of 186 patients participated, out of which 182 were females with a mean age of 49 years. As an outcome, 65 patients were under or normal weight, the number of overweight patients was 45, whereas 76 patients were found to be obese. Multiple morbid states which were not related to iSGS symptomatic recurrence on multivariable analysis were found to be linked with increasing BMI, viz., gastroesophageal reflux disease, hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Investigators concluded that patients with class 1 obesity were more prone to iSGS symptomatic recurrence in comparison to those with underweight and normal weight. However, class 2 and class 3 obesity were not related to iSGS. Proper counseling of class 1 obese patients should be done, in order to examine and manage the symptoms.
