Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition status of primary breast carcinomas and its correlation with metastatic behavior

Breast Cancer Research and Treatment Jan 09, 2019

Savci-Heijink CD, et al. - Investigators examined the mRNA profiles of 151 patients to analyze the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) status of primary breast carcinomas from those who developed distant metastases during the follow-up period. They studied the expression levels of certain proteins involved in EMT via immunohistochemistry. They observed no correlation of EMT with the pattern of metastatic disease, metastasis-specific survival, chemotherapy response in metastatic condition and overall survival. Instead, it was more significantly linked to non-basal-type tumors. They noted only NAT1 and TWIST1 correlated with the gene expression-based EMT status among different possible immunohistochemical EMT markers.
