Epigenetic age acceleration and chronic health conditions among adult survivors of childhood cancer

Journal of the National Cancer Institute Sep 29, 2020

Qin N, Li Z, Song N, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to examine epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) in survivors and assess correlations between EAA, treatment exposures, health behaviors, and chronic health conditions (CHCs). With Infinium EPIC BeadChip on blood-derived DNA from 2,139 survivors and 282 frequency matched controls from the St. Jude Lifetime Cohort Study, genome-wide methylation data were generated. Statistically significant associations between EAA tertiles and incidence of seven CHCs have been identified in time-to-event analyses: hypertension, myocardial infarction, obesity, obstructive pulmonary deficit, peripheral motor neuropathy, peripheral sensory neuropathy, and pulmonary diffusion deficits. In childhood cancer survivors, EAA is statistically significantly higher than in non-cancer controls and is associated with specific treatment exposures, unfavourable health behaviors, and specific CHC presence.
