Epidemiology from tweets: Estimating misuse of prescription opioids in the USA from social media
Journal of Medical Toxicology Aug 26, 2017
Chary M et al. – This study aimed to demonstrate a strong correlation between geographic variation of social media posts mentioning prescription opioid misuse and government estimates of misuse of prescription opioids (MUPO) in the last month. The results of the study concluded that MUPO on Twitter strongly correlated with National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimates of MUPO for each state. It was also suggested that that a natural language processing can be used to analyze social media for in–depth information on syndromic toxicosurveillance.
