Epicardial adipose tissue predicts incident cardiovascular disease and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes

Cardiovascular Diabetology Sep 07, 2019

Christensen RH, von Scholten BJ, Hansen CS, et al. - Since cardiac fat represents a cardiovascular biomarker, researchers focused on the predictive potential of epicardial (EAT), pericardial (PAT) and total cardiac fat in type 2 diabetes as well as examined gender differences. Participants were 1,030 patients with type 2 diabetes who underwent echocardiography for EAT and PAT measurements. Via national registries, a median follow-up of 4.7 years was performed. The composite of incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause death was the endpoint, which occurred in 248 patients (191 men vs 57 women). After adjusting for CVD risk factors, a link between high levels of EAT and the composite of incident CVD and mortality was found in patients with type 2 diabetes, especially in men. A modestly improved risk prediction was offered by EAT over CVD risk factors.
