Environmental and birth characteristics as predictors of short stature in early childhood
Acta Pediatrica Oct 21, 2018
Ghajar LD, et al. - In a large nationally representative sample, researchers assessed environmental and birth characteristics for predictors of short stature. For this investigation, 10,127 children from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten 2011 cohort were assessed, using univariate and multivariable linear and logistic regression to evaluate factors related to short stature (height <3rd percentile) at kindergarten through second grade. Data revealed that predictors of short stature include lower birthweight, preterm status, female sex, and parental income. It was noted that socio-economic disparities and race/ethnicity also influenced height. African-American vs white children had a lower risk of short stature.
