Energy drinks induce acute cardiovascular and metabolic changes pointing to potential risks for young adults: A randomized controlled trial
The Journal of Nutrition Mar 01, 2019
Basrai M, et al. - In this randomized crossover trial involving 38 adults, researchers studied the cardiovascular and metabolic impact of energy drinks (EDs) and mixtures providing relevant ingredients of EDs vs a similarly composed control product (CP) without these components. According to results, changes in blood pressure (BP) were most pronounced after 1 hour—but after a few hours returned to normal—following ED consumption. Investigators observed that ED intake at a single high volume caused adverse changes in the sensitivity of BP, QTc, and insulin in young healthy people. These ED effects, however, cannot be easily attributed to the individual components of caffeine, taurine, or glucuronolactone.
