Endoscopic mucosal resection is superior to rectal suction biopsy for analysis of enteric ganglia in constipation and dysmotility

Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Sep 13, 2017

Barshop K, et al. - This study was performed to examine whether endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) could improve the diagnostic yield for Hirschsprung’s disease (HD) when compared with traditional rectal suction biopsy (RSB) because of the larger and deeper samples acquired for analysis. Compared with RSB, EMR provided greater tissue volumes and could improve the characterization of ganglion cells in the rectal tissue among patients with moderate to severe constipation with suspected HD.
