EMS simple thoracostomy for traumatic cardiac arrest: Post-implementation experience in a ground based suburban/rural EMS agency
Annals of Emergency Medicine Oct 04, 2017
Dickson R, et al. - In this work, researchers examined the performance of simple thoracostomy in a ground -based suburban/rural EMS service for patients with traumatic cardiac arrest and suspected tension pneumothorax. As per findings, properly trained paramedics in a ground EMS service may safely and effectively perform simple thoracostomy in traumatic cardiac arrest. In their sample, there appeared a significant 27% presence of tension pneumothorax, which supported previous reported high rates of tension in this patient population. To evaluate other subsets of patients that may benefit from this procedure, further studies were recommended.
