Trichomonas vaginalis and HIV infection acquisition: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Sexually Transmitted Infections Dec 01, 2018
Masha SC, et al. - Researchers performed a systematic review and meta-analysis in order to assess the existing literature available in English regarding the association of Trichomoniasis and HIV-1 acquisition. Among the 1806 unduplicated citations identified, they identified 18 papers and 1 conference abstract as eligible for inclusion in the review. Outcomes revealed that in HIV acquisition, T. vaginalis is an important factor especially in sub-Saharan Africa (sSA) where the prevalence of both T. vaginalis and HIV-1 are high. This systematic review and meta-analysis supports the evidence suggesting augmentation of HIV acquisition with 50% in correlation to T. vaginalis infection. In both high-risk and low-risk individuals, they suggest diagnosis and treatment of T. vaginalis infection as potential tool to decrease new HIV infections.
