Helicobacter pylori eradication improves glycemic control in type 2 diabetic patients with asymptomatic active Helicobacter pylori infection

Journal of Diabetes Investigation Dec 20, 2018

Cheng KP, et al. – Researchers investigated the effect of Helicobacter pylori infection and its eradication on glycemic control and antidiabetic therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes in this study. In total, 549 diabetic patients were enlisted for sequential two-step approach (IgG serology followed by 13C-urea breath test, UBT) to distinguish “active” (IgG+ and UBT+) from “non-active” (UBT- or IgG-) H. pyloriinfection, and “past” (IgG+ but UBT-) from “never/remote” (IgG-) infection. According to findings, diabetic patients with active H. pylori infection may require a higher intensity of glycemic treatment to achieve comparable glycemia. In addition, the eradication of H. pylori reduces A1C and, thus, improves glycemic control.
