Enterococcus faecalis hydrolyzes dental resin composites and adhesives

Journal of Endodontics Feb 16, 2018

Marashdeh MQ, et al. - During this study, the esterase-like, cholesterol esterase (CE)-like, and pseudocholinesterase (PCE)-like activities of Enterococcus faecalis were estimated and the ability of the bacterium to degrade methacrylate-based resin composite (RC) and total-etch (TE) and self-etch (SE) adhesives were evaluated. E. faecalis was noted to have esterase-like degradative activity towards the dental methacrylate resin restoration materials, which could aid in degrading the dentin-methacrylate resin interface. It could also increase the bacterial biofilm proliferation and penetration into the root canal system.
