Clostridioides difficile colonization and infection in patients with newly diagnosed acute leukemia: Incidence, risk factors, and patient outcomes
American Journal of Infection Control Apr 03, 2019
Ford CD, et al. - Researchers studied 509 consecutive patients with acute leukemia (AL) to assess the frequency, risk factors, and outcomes for Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) in AL patients admitted for induction therapy. A prospective C difficile surveillance and ribotyping analysis were conducted in a subset of these. Outcomes revealed CDI incidence of 2.2/1,000 inpatient days during induction, and CDI was rare after discharge. Patients with acute myelogenous leukemia display the highest CDI incidence. Patients with AL display the number of antibiotics administered as the major risk factor for CDI. However, this population seems to have minimal clinical impact related to CDI.
