Electrocardiographic predictors of atrial fibrillation in nonhypertensive and hypertensive individuals

Journal of Hypertension Sep 13, 2018

Lehtonen AO, et al. - Using a nationwide population-based sample of 5,813 Finns, researchers compared nonhypertensive vs hypertensive individuals for how well ECG abnormalities predict atrial fibrillation. They used multivariable-adjusted Fine–Gray models to assess the predictive ability of 12 ECG abnormalities for atrial fibrillation among nonhypertensive (n=3,148) and hypertensive (n=2,665) individuals. They found that, in both patient groups, several ECG abnormalities were associated with incident atrial fibrillation, but offered merely marginal incremental predictive value. They also noted that in nonhypertensive vs in hypertensive individuals, corrected QT interval and T-wave amplitude in lead augmented vector R could relate stronger to incident atrial fibrillation.
