Eicosapentaenoic acid/arachidonic acid ratio and weight loss during hospitalization for glycemic control among overweight Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes: A retrospective observational study

Lipids in Health and Disease Feb 06, 2019

Nakanishi S, et al. - Using Cox proportional hazard models, researchers studied the correlation between levels of serum eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), arachidonic acid (AA), EPA/AA ratio, and weight loss during hospitalization in participants considered to be overweight with type 2 diabetes. Study participants included 142 patients who were hospitalized for treatment of type 2 diabetes. Investigators observed that patients with high serum levels of EPA or high EPA/AA ratios who were also overweight with type 2 diabetes had an increased ability to effectively reduce body weight under a caloric-restriction regime during hospitalization. According to findings, maintaining high serum levels of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid, such as EPA, might play an important role in preventing weight gain and increasing weight loss when used concomitantly with a structured weight-loss program in type 2 diabetes patients.
