Efficacy of aloe vera mouthwash vs chlorhexidine on plaque and gingivitis: A systematic review

Al-Maweri SA, et al. - A total of 1358 candidates were estimated to study the effectiveness of aloe vera mouthrinse on plaque and gingival inflammation. Researchers observed the benefits of aloe vera in 4 trials whereas chlorhexidine was significantly found more effective than aloe vera in 2 studies, in reducing plaque scores. Only 1 study exhibited better results with chlorhexidine with regards to gingival inflammation. They recorded aloe vera with no or very minimal side effects as compared to chlorhexidine but reported significant side effects like stains and altered taste sensation. Overall, they implied similar impacts of aloe vera mouthwash and chlorhexidine in case of gingival inflammation reduction but lower to chlorhexidine in reducing plaque.
