Effects of vitamin D supplementation on the outcomes of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
BMC Pulmonary Medicine Jul 04, 2018
Wu HX, et al. - Researchers investigated the effectiveness and safety of vitamin D supplementation in pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) treatment by analyzing data from relevant double-blind, randomized controlled trials that reported sputum conversion, clinical response to treatment, adverse events, or mortality. The analysis was performed using eight trials with different doses of vitamin D ranging from 1,000 IU/day to 600,000 IU/month at different intervals in 1,787 patients. In the primary analysis, an increased proportion of sputum smear and culture conversions resulted from vitamin D supplementation, but no improved time to sputum smear and culture conversions was reported. Based on the findings from primary as well as secondary analyses, they concluded that vitamin D supplementation can be considered as a combination therapy in patients with PTB.
