Effects of saffron supplementation on oxidative/antioxidant status and severity of disease in ulcerative colitis patients: A randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled study

Phytotherapy Research Oct 23, 2020

Tahvilian N, Masoodi M, Kashani AF, et al. - In patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), researchers undertook this randomized double‐blinded study to determine if and how disease severity and oxidative/antioxidant factors could be impacted by saffron supplementation. Participants were 80 mild to moderate UC patients randomized to intervention (100 mg saffron/daily) or placebo (100 mg maltodextrin/daily); the study was completed by 75 participants. Patients who received saffron were found to exhibit a significant increase in the mean score of simple clinical colitis activity index questionnaire, the serum levels of total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase after 8 weeks vs the placebo group. Serum levels of malondialdehyde did not differ significantly between the two groups. Overall, it was concluded that improvement in antioxidant factors as well as a decrease in the severity of disease in UC patients may be effectively achieved by using dietary saffron as an alternative therapy.
