Effects of plant and animal high protein diets on immune-inflammatory biomarkers: A 6-week intervention trial

Clinical Nutrition Apr 01, 2019

Markova M, et al. - In this investigation, researchers evaluated the impact on designated biomarkers representing several immune-inflammatory pathways of isocaloric animal and plant protein dietary interventions. Thirty-seven people with type 2 diabetes given a 6-week diet of either high-animal protein (AP) or high-plant protein (PP) were included. At the beginning and end of the study, clinical examinations were conducted. According to results, concentrations of chemerin and progranulin were lower after diets of AP and PP. In AP, TGF-β1 increased while it decreased in PP; conversely in PP calprotectin increased and in AP decreased. In either of the protein diet arms, there were no statistically significant variances in IL-6, tumor necrosis factor α, soluble urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor, lactoferrin, and GDF-15 concentrations. Overall, the investigators suggested that pro-inflammatory chemerin and progranulin levels can be effectively reduced with both AP and PP diets. The impacts appear to be more complicated on the other immune-inflammatory biomarkers.
