Effects of opioid medications on cognitive skills among Emergency Department patients

Marco CA, et al. - Researchers in the Emergency Department (ED) setting examined cognitive skills before and after opioid pain medication. Observations revealed that opioid pain medication was associated with decrease in cognitive performance on the Mini-Mental Status Examination. In view of the wide range of cognitive performance following opioid pain medication, they suggest assessment of individual patients' cognitive function.
