Effects of benzydamine hydrochloride on postoperative sore throat after extubation in children: A randomized controlled trial

BMC Anesthesiology Apr 08, 2020

Yhim HB, Yoon SH, Jang YE, et al. - Researchers performed this randomized, double-blind, prospective analysis to assess whether benzydamine hydrochloride (BH) spray affords an effective option to decrease the incidence of postoperative sore throat (POST) in paediatric patients. A total of 142 children 6–12 years of age were randomly allocated to receive either BH spray or control. Following anaesthesia induction, experts placed direct laryngoscope and applied BH spray to the upper trachea and vocal cord in the BH group and using a cuffed tube lubricated with normal saline, they did intubation. For performing intubation in the control group, a cuffed tube lubricated with normal saline without any intervention was used. The balloon was inflated to a pressure of 20 cmH2O. Experts looked for the presence of POST as well as any adverse events 30 min following arrival to the post-anaesthetic care unit. According to the findings, no decrease in POST was brought about by the application of prophylactic BH spray to the vocal cords and upper trachea in paediatric patients.
