Effect of the local probiotics in the therapy of periodontitis A randomized prospective study
International Journal of Dental Hygiene May 25, 2021
Minić I, et al. - In this pilot study involving 80 patients, researchers sought to examine the use of local probiotics in the treatment of periodontitis as an adjunctive therapy to scaling and root planning (SRP). SRP therapy was administered to all participants. In the test group, the semi-solid probiotic was then applied locally to the periodontal pocket of randomly selected patients (40 of them). The remaining 40 patients were in a control group. Seven days after the applied therapy in the test and control group, there was a significant reduction in the values or bleeding on probing, whereas the values of other parameters did not exhibit a statistically significant difference. Based on the findings, it is possible to conclude that during periodontal treatment, topical application of probiotics in combination with SRP improves the efficacy of conventional non-surgical periodontitis therapy.
