Effect of preoperative dental extraction on postoperative complications after total joint arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Jun 01, 2019
Sonn KA, et al. - Via this retrospective review of a consecutive series of 2457 primary total hip and total knee arthroplasties, researchers examined the link between dental pathology and periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). Findings revealed an overall complication rate of 3.87% with an overall PJI rate of 1.51%. Patients undergoing dental extraction as well as those suffering diabetes and those with immunosuppression had a higher complication rate. Overall, no requirement of routine formal dental clearance for all total joint arthroplasty (TJA) patients was indicated. The risk of postoperative PJI may not be elevated in patients with poor oral hygiene. There appeared no necessity of preoperative tooth extraction in patients undergoing elective TJA.
