Effect of polyethylene conformity on total knee arthroplasty early clinical outcomes

Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy Oct 21, 2018

Indelli PF, et al. - Authors assessed the subjective patient satisfaction and clinical and radiological outcomes in two groups of patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) using an identical third-generation design with different conformity in the polyethylene insert. Participants were 100 consecutive patients undergoing TKA because of knee osteoarthritis who were randomized to either Posterior-Stabilized (PS) implants or Medially Congruent (MC) implants. This study demonstrated that reducing the level of intra-articular conformity had negligible impact on PROMs and objective short-term clinical results, but a possibly positive effect on ROM. Findings suggested using a minimal level of constraint once a satisfactory intra-operative stability is obtained.
